The S-70i machine manufactured by the Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation has been the response to the US Army's demand for a new, multi-purpose utility tactical transport helicopter (UTTAS). The test-flights started in December 1974. In December 1976 the helicopter was selected by the US Army, defeating its competitors from Bell and Boeing-Vertol. Then it gained the temporary YUH-60A designation. The first helicopter, designated UH-60A Black Hawk was delivered in October 1978.
The helicopter combines excellent performance with great fitness-for-use; this has been evidenced with the helicopter's many versions, both in land and maritime applications. High operating values have also been confirmed in various climatic conditions. The Black Hawk is used to transport troops, supply and the injured, it has also proven to be an efficient transport helicopter on the battlefield in Iraq and in many other operations. It is also used for patrol missions (FLIR, marine search radar) as well as electronic warfare. In its armed version, Black Hawk can be equipped with machine guns, rocket launchers, unmanned or routed missiles as well as torpedoes (in naval variant).
Many innovative technical solutions have been introduced in the helicopter, such as the rotor blades suspension on the elastomeric bearings, the incline blades shape, and many other.
The 2000th helicopter was produced in 1994, in 2001 the number of helicopters reached 2,500.
With more than 3,000 helicopter produced, Black Hawk used in 31 countries has been in the air for more than 10 million hours.
