What else do we want to know about these noble birds?
A Chinese millionaire has paid 300 thousand pounds for the pigeon; this makes nearly 1.5 million PLN. The bird was sold by the 66-year-old Leo Heremans, a breeder from Belgium. This transaction was carried out two years ago, yet it still regarded sensational, not only among breeders and enthusiasts.
However, not only race-pigeons prices may come as astounding. At a short distance these birds can travel as fast as 100 km/h. A well-trained pigeon would cover a 500 km route in six hours. Sometimes the distance reaches 2,000 km.
You may also find it interesting to know that 32 carrier pigeons after World War II were awarded the Dickin Medal. It is the equivalent of the Victoria Cross, the British military decorations awarded for acts of courage and bravery on the battlefield. The medal was established in 1943 by Maria Dickin, the founder of the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA); the medal to honour was a war-time recognition for animal.
These are just some of the interesting facts about pigeons. If you want to learn more about these intriguing birds join us this weekend for the 46th Regional Carrier Pigeons Exhibition / Świętokrzyskie Exhibition of Pedigree Pigeons / Świętokrzyskie Rabbit Exhibition held on 5 and 6 December 2015.
