The Hourglass which will be the culminating-element of the Time Column set in the Targi Kielce courtyard has just returned after restoration in Cracow goldsmith's workshop "Kamea". Copper it had been made 17 years ago was covered with so-called pure gold. The column with the Hourglass will be the decoration installed just before the International Defence Industry Exhibition
The obelisk with the hourglass was originally set up in 1999 in front of the Kielce Town Hall; it was designed to commemorate the arrival of the twenty-first century. The "Time Column" was designed by Slawomir Mick. The monument was then dismantled in 2007 and stored for many years. Now it has found a new location at Targi Kielce. The restored hourglass has just been returned to Targi Kielce by the "Kamea" goldsmith's workshop of Krakow. The hourglass was thoroughly renovated and gold-plated.
- The most difficult task was to clean the copper hourglass off - says Wojciech Talaga, a master goldsmith who boasts many-year experience, the owner of the studio. - The hourglass was acid-cleaned, sanded, polished with special brushes in order to make it shine. Only then gold-plating of pure gold could be applied on the surface - The studio has treated and gold-plated elements of the altar-table for St. Mary's Church in Krakow, parts of historic automobiles and fences elements. We even worked on medieval, Gothic monstrances. However this has been the first time ever we have had a time capsule to gold-plate - he admits.
Already at the beginning of September, the "Time Column" with gold-plated hourglass on top will be put on show. Just like before it will be surrounded with the 12 zodiac signs. Now Targi Kielce's courtyard will be the setting for the monument.
- We follow the example set at the obelisk unveiling on the New Year's Eve of 1999. Inside the hourglass there will be news, small objects and coins which represent today's state of things and Targi Kielce's business activities. The column with the hourglass will also be specially illuminated with the use of spot-light, therefore it is also properly displayed and presented also after dark - says Jacek Nowak, Director of the Administrative and Technical Department at Targi Kielce.
The Hourglass will add extra splendour to the upcoming MSPO. However, the official unveiling of the "Time Column" will take place in mid-September. Then the keepsakes of today will also be placed inside.
